General information about basaltfibers

Basalt  is formed by the solidify process of lava.                                                                                                                                      

The crystallization process forms columns with a hexagonal shape.

The solidified  lavas and intrusions constitute the igneous rocks.

Only from  this igneous rock -basalt–  basaltfibers can be extracted.

 

It is estimated that basalt  has five times the volume of all other extrusive rocks together.

 

Basaltfiber the unknown commodity

The process of extracting basaltfibers from the lava was discovered by a Canadian in the beginning of the twenty’s century

This was the  changing of the solidify process of lave  , which resulted  into an amorphous material.

Until recent the “ West “ did not pay much attention to this discovery .

The “East” particularly the former Soviet Union discovered the outstanding properties of the basaltfiber material and produced all kinds of military goods with basaltfiber. It was therefore qualified  as military good and the knowledge about the fibers and its applications was very confidential , even  a secret .

It was until the late nineties that this status was lifted.

It seems that nowadays  also the  “West” is also looking with a growing interest to this basaltfiber.

More and more tables are published with the different properties between the well know fibers in connection with basalt fiber.

In general the basaltfiber can be placed between glassfiber and carbonfiber.

Many academic studies are published nowadays  about the properties and applications of this natural fiber – the basaltfibers – in all kinds of industries.

 

The process of extracting basaltfibers from the lava

First the basalt  is brought back to lava by heating it till 15000 C  and by applying a very rapid  solidify process  hereby the normal crystallization process is disrupted and the basaltfiber becomes an amorphous material with outstanding properties.

Such as 2,5 times stronger than steel , 4 times lighter than steel , the CO2-footprint is 170% lower in comparison with the production of steel  and many other outstanding qualifications  , which makes this fiber unique amongst other well know fibers.
